Mast General Store

Regional favorite Mast General Store has recently poured over $5.8 million into a new location in downtown Winston-Salem (516 N. Trade St.). The Valle Crusis-based company offers a mix of local fare, country store charm, and quality merchandise. Winston-Salem’s location marks the chains 10th store opening.

Lowe’s Foods

Winston-Salem based Lowe’s Foods has been renovating their stores over the past few years in order to showcase and align with regional brands and offer locals a great shopping experience. Over the past two months, the grocer has started distributing beer from almost 20 local breweries and has recently partnered with Greensboro-based brewer Natty Green’s to offer a limited edition Boxcar Coffee Stout exclusively in their beer dens.

Unifi

Greensboro-based textiles giant Unifi is finding increased success through their innovative REPREVE fabric line, a process of creating durable fabrics through recycling plastic bottles. Among the current engagements of REPREVE are Ford’s F-150 seats and over 1100 colleges and universities whose graduation gowns are made right here in the Piedmont. The Yadkinville plant currently pushes out 42 million pounds of production a year, with plans to increase that to over 72 million in coming years. Since its introduction, the program has kept over 60 million plastic bottles out of landfills by giving the new life.

NC A&T and UNC Greensboro Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoenginerring

A partnership between NC A&T State and UNC-Greensboro in 2013 produced the innovative concept of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering. To date, the consortium has over 30 members, including players with strong ties to our region such as: VF Corporation (parent company to Wrangler, The North Face, and Lucy), International Textile Group Inc., Cone Denim, and Banner Life Sciences. The 105,000 square foot facility located at 2907 E. Lee Street in Greensboro offers members collective access to over $5 million in complex equipment such as electron microscopes, spectrometers, chemical analysis teams and more, all for the reasonable membership fee of $5000 per year. The School expects membership to rise above 75 companies in the next 4-5 years. Developing products at the facility are gaining national attention, with an eco-friendly bait product under consideration to be featured on the TV show, Shark Tank.

Foothills Brewing

Winston-Salem’s own Foothills Brewing (Downtown brewpub: 628 W. 4th Street; Brewery and Tasting Room: 3800 Kimwell Drive) is also expanding, with the recent addition of a tasting room offering 28 custom brews on tap. The local favorite is also starting offer brewery tours to add to the cultural experience.
